HDI Awarded Grant to Promote Diversity and Provide Three Scholarships for Graduate Certificates in Developmental Disabilities

We’re very excited to share that HDI has received a National Training Initiatives (NTI) grant from the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) to provide three professionals from Appalachia with full scholarships to our online graduate certificate in developmental disabilities! The scholarships will cover tuition, travel and books required for the program, and these students will also agree to serve on HDI’s Underserved Populations Engagement Committee to help us further benefit more diverse populations.

Fall Seminar: The Right to Make Choices: An Introduction to Supported Decision-Making

Join us for the second presentation in our Fall Seminar series on Thursday, October 8, 2015  from 1:00 – 3:00p ET to learn more about Supported Decision-Making (SDM) and an overview of the Jenny Hatch case at the UK Coldstream Research Campus Human Development Training Room (1525 Bull Lea Road, Lexington KY 40511) with live videoconferencing to sites around the state. This seminar will discuss how to support people with disabilities in gaining more independence to make choices about their future. We will discuss Jenny Hatch as an example of a young woman who advocated and obtained independence from her parents to make her own choices about where she wanted to live.

HDI Contributes to the Largest One-Day Service Event in the State of Kentucky!

The University of Kentucky’s FUSION 2015 (For Unity and Service In Our Neighborhoods) is the largest one-day service event in the state of Kentucky. In its 13th year, more than 75 community agencies and neighborhoods in the Lexington area participated, and more 1,300 faculty, staff, and students were involved in Fusion 2015 on Monday, August 24th.  Continue reading

Kentucky Obstetricians Receive Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida Resources From UK Human Development Institute and Partners

During the week of Aug. 25, the University of Kentucky’s Human Development Institute (HDI)/National Center for Prenatal and Postnatal Resources and the Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky (SBAK) are mailing packets of accurate, evidence-based, current, and medically reviewed information about Down syndrome and spina bifida to nearly 400 obstetricians statewide.
